U.S. Bank Repossessions Surge 42% as Foreclosure Activity Rises in 2026

- Foreclosure Market
The number of American homes repossessed by banks is climbing sharply, signaling a shift in the U.S. foreclosure market. According to the latest August 2026 foreclosure report from ATTOM, lenders repossessed 5,794 homes nationwide, representing a 42% increase compared with August 2025.
More Than 40,000 Properties Face Foreclosure Activity
ATTOM reported that 40,277 U.S. properties received foreclosure filings during August 2026.
Although foreclosure activity is increasing, national levels remain below historical pre-pandemic norms.
Texas, Florida, and California Lead Foreclosure Activity
Some of the nation’s largest housing markets are experiencing particularly significant foreclosure activity. Florida recorded 3,189 foreclosure starts during August, followed by Texas with 3,126 and California with 2,565. Texas also led the nation in completed foreclosures, with 1,835 bank repossessions. Major Texas metropolitan areas with significant activity included Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio.
What Does This Mean for Homebuyers?
Rising foreclosure activity could create additional opportunities for buyers searching for properties below typical market prices. Bank-owned properties, also known as REO properties, may become available for sale after lenders complete the foreclosure process.
However, foreclosure properties are not automatically bargains. Buyers should carefully evaluate property conditions, repair expenses, comparable sales, and financing costs before making a purchase. For investors interested in fixer-uppers, properties requiring renovation may also present opportunities outside the traditional foreclosure market.
Is Another Housing Crisis Coming?
Despite the sharp increase in bank repossessions, current foreclosure activity remains considerably below the levels associated with the 2008 housing crisis. The latest figures suggest that foreclosure activity is increasing from historically low levels rather than indicating an immediate nationwide housing collapse.
Nevertheless, continued increases in completed foreclosures deserve attention, particularly in markets experiencing affordability pressures and slower home sales.
