San Diego is named after Saint Didacus which means Diego de Alcala in Spanish. This is considered to be United States’ eighth largest city, and is California’s second-largest after Los Angeles. Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, a Portuguese, was the first European to visit this place in 1542. He then owned the right of the bay for the Spanish Empire and called it San Miguel. Sebastian Vizcaino then came after him in 1602 to map the coast of California. He inspected the harbor which is called Mission Bay and Point Loma today. He named the region Saint Didacus after a Spaniard better known as San Diego de Alcala. On November 12, 1602, the feast day of San Diego was celebrated.
The Navy Coaling Station in Point Loma was established in 1901 when the U.S. Naval came, and this expanded in the 1920s. Transportation in San Diego is mainly done by car, as 80% of its residents rely on the use of a privately owned car instead of the public transportation available to them. As such, the roadways and freeways within the city are extensive and complex. With major highways that run through it that run all the way south down to Tijuana and even up to that of North to Canada. The amount of people on the road has led to a great amount of congestion and there have been several transportation projects that are being thought up and proposed in order to help with the congestion.
