Except for the AG of New York and some other state AGs there has been a general move by the team of federal agencies investigating the foreclosure abuses to come to broad settlement with the mega banks quickly. But Schneiderman’s group is reluctant to give up their own course of actions easily.

The foreclosure situation is grim in New Jersey. The nation is ranking third in the country after Florida and Nevada. The low-income neighbourhoods are worst affected where housing value will further fall. During the boom the people ran to the suburbs for affordable houses but now they are fighting unemployment and high fuel costs.

Abruptly the head of the investigating team probing the irregularities of foreclosure operations of the banks, Tom Miller the AG of Iowa has excluded New York’s AG Eric Schneiderman from the executive committee. Recently Schneiderman was under pressure for voicing his opposition to any broad settlement with the banks.

Heads of Columbiana City had taken a loan for water and sewer lines mainly for the benefit of a sprawling development project – Firestone Farms. But the developer stopped making repayments when the economy tanked. A judge has now ordered foreclosure and the city is hopeful of realizing money from the sale.

The attorneys general of New York,Massachusetts,Delaware and Nevada are not agreeing to reach a broad settlement with the banks; they want the focus to remain on foreclosure malpractices without giving a broader release to the banks. Cases have been filed by the states against some banks.

A unanimous ruling by Massachusetts Supreme Court permitting those facing eviction from foreclosure to challenge the lender to prove ownership of the property and mortgage has infused housing advocates with cheer. They feel now lenders will be compelled to negotiate to arrive at more reasonable terms.

In Jamestown the house ownership numbers have dropped at an alarming rate following the foreclosure crisis. The health of the local economy depends on house owners. Many of the units are in a serious state of disrepair and are being demolished. These are eyesores and damaging adjoining property values.
