Personal Financial Advisor (Some Common Sense Guidelines to Finding an Advisor)

personal_finance

Yes it might seem reasonable for you to think that if you find someone that is telling you that they are a financial advisor and they have an office that lists them as doing that and everything looks good then they should be a good choice. If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck it just might be a duck. One thing to keep in mind is that no two people are ever created completely equal. You really need to consider how many dentists did you go through before you found one that was good?  They all went to school and learned the same things and yet some of them are going to be better than others.

Now that I have your attention let’s look at what you might want to consider when looking for someone to handle your future. First of all I would suggest that you ask for references. If they are legit and a good business person they will welcome that question from you and will readily give you some contact info. Follow up with these folks and get general information about how they were treated and if they like the way he handles work for them. Don’t get too personal or in depth.

Then have a sit down meeting with the advisor and make sure you click. Just because the man or woman might be a genius with money and investments does not mean that you can work with one on one. There may be a personality conflict that you can’t work through and you need to know that as soon as you can.

If all that works out tell him or her what you are looking to invest and where you want to be in ten or twenty years and what sorts of things you want the investments to do for you and your family. Then ask him to shoot back some ideas that he or she thinks would be a good avenue to get you where you want to be.

Listen carefully. You want someone that is going to give you good every day words to answer your questions. If he lays down a smoke screen of buzzwords and industry specific vernaculars then I would politely end the interview and continue your search. There is no way that you want to work with this person. If you wanted to know what all those words meant you could just invest your cash yourself and save his or her commissions and fees.
