The Humane Society of Washington is now granting funds to shelters so than they can organize help for small animals that are left behind. It has granted $2,000 per shelter specifically for foreclosed pets.

The main reason people give for leaving pets at shelter points is that they are shifting. From this scant information it is difficult to gauge how many are moving because of foreclosures because the people are reluctant and ashamed to come out with it. But the fact is that the number of shelter seekers is increasing especially in those regions where foreclosures have been most active.

New laws are coming into effect about chaining animals in the backyard and going away. But it is difficult to enforce the law with a flood of foreclosures deluging the entire country.
