Foreclosure Battered Nevada is Being Wooed by Both Political Parties
Foreclosure battered Nevada is being wooed by both political parties. It is one of the worst hit states and the recession has taken a heavy toll on several places there, including Las Vegas City. The state is gearing up for the contest to be held next year.
Republicans are trying to make their organization stronger in order to counter the clout of Harry Reid, the Democrat leader of the Senate. His organization had much to do with Obama winning the 2008 election. Reid, himself, battled successfully for a re-election bid in 2010. The Democrats have more registered voters than their rivals. A conference lasting three days is being organized by Reid to focus on winning the elections in this region.
The Republicans contend that it will not be easy but tough for Reid to repeat the performance of 2008 considering the miserable condition of the economy of the state. Rober Uithoven, consultant of the Republicans in Nevada said, “Simply put, he has failed miserably to deliver on the promises of his previous campaign”. Uithoven is not tied up with any candidate.
Republicans need to choose a candidate for the upcoming elections. Since last August, opinion polls have not been published but, according to insiders, Mitt Romney has a good chance to win the next election. His Mormon faith could definitely help him in standing out from the crowd.
This faith that could have been a liability in other regions is likely to be of help in Nevada. Mormons comprise about 11% of the population there and they were one of the positive causes behind his victory in the 2008 caucus; this time too it will be a factor.
Romney has organized many much anticipated events here in Las Vegas during the past couple of months. In September, he released a plan for jobs and collected $10 million. Sig Rogich also an unaffiliated consultant in the Republican camps said, “He’s been here more than anyone, he’s got a solid organization, and the Mormon community will vote heavily in proportion to others”.
The Hispanic Governor of Nevada Brian Sandoval is a powerful supporter of Perry. But Perry’s bland debating performances could harm his Nevada prospects. On the other hand Herman Cain, who is nationally popular, could see this help him gain success in the following January caucus.
Other candidates are Ron Paul, Michele Bachmann and Rick Santorum. Professor Kenneth Fernandez of University of Nevada-Las Vegas commented, “Anyone who’s running for the presidency is going to need to articulate some type of coherent plan”.
