The foreclosure crisis is causing a change of attitude towards dreams and its interpretations. Decades old indifference to dreams, that has always been given great importance in all ancient cultures, is being discarded. Serious attempts are being made to rent the veil of ignorance behind dreams. There are more cases of people suffering from nightmares and dreams surrounding the question of their basic stability – the house that is the home.

Paul Thomas is 47. He is dealer in Motorcycles in Stamford. He claims that a string of dreams helped him to come to a decision about his housing problem. He and his wife shifted to Stamford in 2006 and soon got into a legal tussle with their landlord. The court gave them a ruling asking them to leave after paying a month’s rent. But they missed the deadline and marshals came to evict them within 15 minutes. They shifted to the house of a neighbour. That night Paul had a dream that he was homeless and begging.

In the next lodgings they met with akin fate since the landlord was foreclosed upon. They shifted again and this time they found this landlord engaged in illegal constructions. They complained and the situation turned nasty. Again Paul had a violent dream of being surrounded by villains. The couple gave up the house and is now making fresh efforts to find a house of their choice.

Recently more importance is being given to the interpretation of the dream by the dreamer rather than by the analyst. Jungian psychoanalyst from Berkley, Ellen Y. Siegelman said that in this therapy of listening to the patient the dreams about their homes can help the analyst to mark their progress. Dr. Siegelman said, “I’ve seen people in therapy go from dreams at the beginning of houses falling down, needing to be propped up or in disrepair. If you follow the sequence in dreams, quite often at the end, there are dreams of houses fixed up, new light and extra rooms. That’s an interesting marker of where somebody is psychologically.”

45 year old Cara Letofsky has been experiencing a regular dream about shifting into a new apartment with her college friends. Suddenly, in the dream, they stumbled upon an extra room and did not know what to do with it. This dream kept following her from the time she was single till today when she is married with two children. Finally the dream stopped after she and her husband by adding a new guest room to their home.
